TOPIC: Personal Fitness
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to –
- mention some components of Physical Fitness and Body conditioning e.g. agility, power, flexibility and balance;
- demonstrate the execution of agility, power, flexibility and balance;
- identify activities for measuring agility, power, flexibility and balance;
- measure their agility, power, flexibility and balance levels;
- mention the benefits of these fitness components.
The pupils are required to already have learned in basic 4, 5 and 6 physical fitness and body conditioning programmes.

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
Components of physical fitness are essential for complete fitness of the body and mind. All these fitness components have a specific purpose and part in being physically fit and healthy.
Physical fitness and wellness is far more attainable than commonly perceived. It helps individuals to look, feel and do their best.
Obtaining and maintaining physical fitness is a result of physical activity, exercise, proper diet and nutrition along with proper rest for physical recovery.
TYPES OF PHYSICAL FITNESS EXERCISE
- Push up or press up
- Carrying weights
- Running on the treadmill
COMPONENT OF PHYSICAL FITNESS
There are four components of physical fitness:
Agility is the ability to change the position of the entire body and to control the movement of your whole body.
Power is the ability to perform a certain task (exercise, work, etc.) with strength and speed.
Flexibility is the ability to move the joints.
Balance is the ability to remain firm with movement or shaking.
MEASURING OF PHYSICAL FITNESS COMPONENTS
- Measurement of agility – 10m shuttle run;
- Measurement of power – sergeant jump, standing broad jump;
- Measurement of flexibility – straight knee toe touch;
- Measurement of balance – beam walk
BENEFIT OF AGILITY, POWER, FLEXIBILITY AND BALANCE
- Injury prevention;
- The mind – body connection;
- Improved balance and coordination;
- Improved recovery time;
- Increased results in mineral time.
- To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
- To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
- Describes the activities for measuring: agility, power, flexibility and balance;
- Demonstrates the measurement of the above physical fitness components;
- Pupil’s Activities – Watch the teacher’s demonstration.
- Pupil’s Activities – Perform the activities.
- Measure their agility, power, flexibility and balance.
- Supervises pupil’s activities.
- Note taking.
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
Next Lesson – Gymnastics
- Mention any three physical fitness exercises and body conditioning;
- State the benefits of agility, power, Flexibility and balance;
- Demonstrate the physical fitness exercises used to measure agility, power, flexibility and balance e.g. 10 metres shuttle jump, sergeant jump, standing broad jump etc.;
- Measure their agility, power, flexibility and balance levels.
