PREVIOUS LESSON – SAFETY
A machine is a simple object which makes our work easier to do. Many objects in your classroom and in your home such as a pair of scissors, bottle opener and cutlass, are examples of simple machines.
In science, any means which helps us to use less energy to do much work or overcome a large force is called a machine.
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to –
- collect and identify simple machines;
- identify the parts of the lever;
- list common uses of levers.
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
- Bottle opener
- Can opener
- Scissors; Pliers
- Chart/diagram of some common levers/li>
METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
The simplest machines are the levers and pulleys.
A lever is a simple machine that has the point of motion where effort can be made to carry a load.
EXAMPLES OF LEVER
- Nut cracker
- Hockey stick
- Wheel barrow
- Door handle
- 1 hole puncher
PARTS OF LEVER
The three most important parts of a lever are Load, Effort, And Fulcrum or Pivot.
USES OF LEVER
- Seesaw is used to have fun with a friend;
- Scissor is used for cutting;
- Crowbar used for split something apart or take out nails;
- Hockey stick used to play hockey;
- Wheel barrow is used move dirt or anything else;
- Door handle is used to get through a door;
- Dolly it is used to move heavy boxes and freight;
- 1 hole puncher it is you for making hole on belt; etc.
- To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
- To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
- Collects examples of levers for pupils to identify;
- Pupil’s Activities – Collect and identify some simple machines;
- Pupil’s Activities – Take turns to play with lever, e.g. the see-saw and explain how it works;
- Pupil’s Activities – Make and use simple lever.
- Name and group; Guides pupils to identify parts of lever;
- Pupil’s Activities – Draw the different types of lever and identify the parts;
- Pupil’s Activities – List common uses of levers.
- Summarizes the major points on the board;
- Pupil’s Activities – ask and answer questions; write notes.
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
- Name five common levers and machines in their homes;
- Locate the pivot (fulcrum) load and effort arms in common lever machines;
- State five common uses of levers.
