PREVIOUS LESSON – BASIC SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PRIMARY 4

TOPIC – Common Pests and Diseases of Crop plants 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

  1. define and identify common pests on our farm.
  2. describe the damages caused by pests.
  3.  state ways of controlling pests.
  4. list the causes of plant diseases.
  5. state how the disease can be controlled.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

  1. Fresh or preserved specimens of pests.
  2. Specimen of maize, bean, guinea corn seeds infested by weevil, beetle or termite.
  3. Chart showing local farm pests.
  4. Charts and posters of squirrels, rats, grass, cutter, birds, crabs, etc.

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

INTRODUCTION – PESTS 

Pests are insect or other animal that attack and destroy crop plants.

IDENTIFICATION OF COMMON PESTS 

  1. Beetle
  2. Weevil
  3. Grasshopper
  4. Locust
  5. Caterpillar
  6. Termite
  7. Rodents
  8. Quela birds
  9. Bats
  10. Monkeys

PRESENTATION

  • To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  1. Displays and identifies chart showing pests and diseases.
  2. Pupil’s Activities – Identify chart showing pests and diseases.
  3. Defines pests and diseases of crop plants.
  4. Pupil’s Activities – Define pests and diseases of crop plants.
  5. Discusses the damages done to the crops by pests.
  6. Pupil’s Activities – Describe the damages done to the crops by pests.
  7. Guides pupils to collect common pests and diseases of crop plants.
  8. Pupil’s Activities – Participate in collection of common pests.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

  • Next Lesson – Some common crop diseases.

LESSON EVALUATION 

Pupils to:

  1. State the meaning of farm pests.
  2. Name five pests in the locality.
  3. Identify two damages caused by pests.
  4. List three causal agents of crop diseases.
