TOPIC: Three Dimensional Shapes

LEARNING AREA

• Lesson One – Identification of Cube, Cuboid, Cylinder and Sphere
• Lesson Two – Open and Closed Shapes
• Lesson Three – Properties of Cube and Cuboid
• Lesson Four – Properties of Cylinder and Sphere
• Lesson Five – Revision, Quantitative and Test

TIME – 40 Minutes each.

LEARNING OUTCOME

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

1. distinguish between open and closed shapes.
2. Identify and list properties of cube, cuboid, cylinder and sphere.
3. identify the uses of 3-dimensional shapes in homes and their environment.

RATIONALE

The objects around you — the ones you can pick up, touch, and move around — are 3 dimensional. These shapes have a third dimension: depth. Cubes, prisms, pyramids, spheres, cones, and cylinders are all examples of 3 dimensional objects. The 3 dimensional objects can be rotated in space.

The concept of 3 dimensional shapes will enable pupils to understand and appreciate their relevance in our daily life.

LEARNING MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Cartons.
2. Milk tins.
3. Plastic buckets, etc.
4. Water tanks.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

A cube, rectangular prism, sphere, cone and cylinder are the basic 3-dimensional shapes we can see around us. The concept of 3 dimensional shapes will expose to discover various 3 dimensional shapes.
