TOPIC – WATER EVAPORATION AND CONDENSATION 

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

  1. identify pure water as a liquid with no colour, taste and odour.
  2. observe that heated water can disappear as steam.
  3. observe that steam can change back to water.
  4. observe that water can change to ice (solid).

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

  1. Water and other liquids.
  2. Source of heat.
  3. Containers for displaying and boiling water.
  4.  A cool flat surface.
  5.  Ice block

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES – EXAMINE A BOWL OF WATER WITH NO COLOUR, TASTE AND ODOUR 

 

PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES – WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANCE OR USES OF WATER?

  1. For survival.
  2. For breakdown foods.
  3. For regular body temperature.
  4. For cooking.
  5. For bathing.
  6. For water clothes and plate.
  7. For growing crops.
  8. For transportation.
  9. For commercial purposes.

 

TEACHER’S/ACTIVITIES ON WATER EVAPORATION 

  • Drying clothes in the sun.
  • Continue boiling of water in an open pot.
  • Ironing wet clothes.
  • Dry wet ground after rainfall.
  • Dry body after bathing.

 

What has happened to the water on the above mentioned instances?

 

Teacher’s remark – The water in liquid state, has been heated by the sun and turned to water vapour (steam). That’s, the water escapes into the air. 

 

TEACHER’S/PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES 2 – WHAT IS EVAPORATION 

Evaporation is how water escapes into the air as water vapour (steam). That’s, water change to steam.

 

TEACHER’S/ACTIVITIES ON WATER CONDENSATION 

  1. Boil water in an open pot for 20 minutes.
  2. What did you you observe coming out of the pot? __________________
  3. Gently place the cover on the pot for 5 minutes and remove the cover.
  4. What do you notice on the inside of the cover? Water
  5. How did the water get there?

 

Teacher’s remark – The process where the steam becomes water is called condensation. 

 

TEACHER’S/PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES – WHAT IS CONDENSATION? 

Condensation is how the water vapour (steam) becomes water. That’s, steam changes to water.

 

 

PRESENTATION

  • To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

1. Displays water and other liquids in bowls in the class.

Pupil’s Activities – Observe water and other liquids displayed by teacher and discuss in term of colour, taste and odour.

2. Demonstrates Evaporation.

Pupil’s Activities – Observe teacher’s demonstration on evaporation.

3. Demonstrates condensation.

Pupil’s Activities – Observe teacher’s demonstration on evaporation.

4. Leads class discussion and initiates active participation of pupils.

Pupil’s Activities – Pupils participate actively, making suggestions.

5. Presents ice blocks to pupils and guide them to understand that the ice block is frozen water.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

 

LESSON EVALUATION 

Pupils to:

  1. list two features that identify a liquid as water.
  2. state at least one change that would be observed when water is heated.
  3. state at least one change that would be observed when steam condenses.
  4. state one change that would be observed when water freezes.
