**LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION TO SPEED**

Pupil’s Activities 1 – Compare Speed of Two or More Motors

If you are traveling to your hometown, which of the means of land transportation will you like to take? State reasons for any of the list below.

1. Hummer bus

2. Coastal bus

3. Lt bus

4. Volkswagen bus

5. Marcopolo bus

Expected Pupil’s Response – Money, speed and time.

Teacher’s remark – The choice of means of transportation especially land transportation is greatly determined by speed and time takes to reach various destinations.

Speed is often measured in kilometres per hour (minute) or meters per second. This is written for short as km/h(m) or m/s. To find the average speed, you divide distance covered by time taken.

Working Examples

- A car takes 3 700 km in 5 hours. What is its average speed?

Given,

Distance = 3 700 km

Time = 5 hours

Average speed = 3 700 km /5 h

= 740 km/h

- Ayomide walked a distance of 180 metres in 5 seconds. Find his average speed.

Average speed = 180 m/5 s = 36 m/s.

1. If it takes 3 hours to drive a distance of 210 km on a motorway, what would be your average speed in km/h?

2. A train travelled 10 080 km in 12 hours. Find its average speed.
